In your Did You Know section you say that the warehouses around Shad Thames remained empty from their closure in 1972 until the 1990 redevelopment.  In fact they were squatted by skint artists for a few years in the 70's, before the council let them rent cheaply.  They were there until Conran and other developers forced them out in the mid 80s.  Many of those artists stayed in the area and went on to form the Bermondsey Artists' Group who are based in the Cafe Gallery Southwark Park.

This is all documented in a DVD: The Bermondsey Artists' Group Story which they sell in the gallery.

Can we get rid of all these user names and use our real names please. I thought the whole point of this site is to keep the spirit of Bermondsey alive. Be proud to be from Bermondsey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I totally agree with you Tony - yes let us all be proud that we came from Bermondsey those who live there now and the ones like myself who no longer live in Bermondsey but our hearts and memories remain there always.

Leather hide, Bermondsey was famous for its tanneries. On the corner of Earnest Street / Cannon Murnane Road, (before they put Spa Park there), was a pub called The Tanners named after the tanneries. And also alaska in Grange Road was a skin sorters where they used to sort seal skins etc.

Hi Tony...your mention of the Alaska Fur Company...in Grange Road...reminded me of the "Hooter Chorus"that used to take place all over Bermondsey, from the Factories signalling Start...Dinner...and finish times....just so that you knew if you were late for work...with the dire consequences that went with such a disaster.........Mind you....the roads were much quieter in those days....every one was at work........
