In the 60's.the Now engine shed was just a crumbling Shell, full of Pidgeons and their residue.I worked at Courages at the time, and a Group of us had a good search around the area,in the Pump House and at the remains of the Shaft building, which always had a sort of Garden on top of it.I had researched the Building of the Tunnel from the Local Bermondsey Library, and discovered that there were several fatalities during the Digging of it.Two incidents of water entering the Works..one of which,According to my Research, was in fact Fresh water, and not river water.Denoting a Break through from a Freshwater Scource Beneath the Thames.Either a Stream,or a Water Table. We also Contacted London Transport, requesting a Walk through, after the Trains a Stopped running for the Day/night.But they would not allow the General Public into the Tunnel.I did however ,write to the Science Museum with regard to having the Engine Shed Restored...but did not recieve an answer from them.Hence the interest waned from our Group..I am very pleased that it has been restored, and that recognition has rightfully been granted to this marvelous project of a bygone age. There are several Drawings of Crinoline Ladies, walking down the Sloping entrances, which were designed for the Transpot of the Day,but were found to be too steep for horse drawn vehicles..So i Read.
